A Sabrosito Coffee Reflection
Stay Human
Some days remind us that life is fragile, family is important, and kindness still matters.
Today was a sad day.
A loved one in my family passed away recently, and like many families do during hard moments, everyone is now trying to figure out the painful details that come after a loss. The grief is already heavy enough, but then come the arrangements, the costs, the decisions, the phone calls, and the emotional weight that nobody is ever fully ready for.
I debated whether to write this at all. Some moments feel too personal to share. But I also believe that life gives us reminders, and sometimes those reminders are worth passing along. Not to judge anyone. Not to call anyone out. Just to remind us that we all need a hand once in a while.
I spoke with a family member who is carrying much of that burden, and after that conversation, my heart felt even heavier.
Because sometimes the deepest hurt comes from realizing that the people you thought would show up are the ones who turn away. When someone is grieving, overwhelmed, and trying to do the right thing, the last thing they should feel is alone. They should not have to wonder why family, friends, or the people they counted on suddenly became quiet when help was needed most.
That is the part that stayed with me.
Not the amount.
Not the cost.
The silence.
The distance.
The feeling that someone was left carrying something heavy that should have been shared.
Life has a way of showing us who shows up when things get hard. Not when there is something to celebrate. Not when everyone is smiling in pictures. Not when things are easy. But when someone is grieving, stressed, overwhelmed, and quietly wondering how they are going to get through the next step.
That is when kindness matters.
That is when humility matters.
That is when family, friendship, and basic human decency are supposed to mean something.
I helped the way I could. I sent what I was able to send, donated to the family’s fundraiser, and shared it with others who might be able to help. I am not saying that for credit. I am saying it because sometimes helping is not about having extra. Sometimes helping is about seeing someone carrying too much and deciding not to let them carry it alone.
We all need a hand once in a while, and being there is more important than ever.
We all have our own bills, problems, stress, and responsibilities. I understand that. Life is not easy for most people. But there are moments when we have to stop and remember that we are still human.
Stay humble enough to care.
Stay kind enough to help.
Stay aware enough to notice when someone is hurting.
And when you can show up, show up.
It does not always have to be money. Sometimes it is a phone call. Sometimes it is a meal. Sometimes it is sharing a fundraiser. Sometimes it is helping with paperwork, making arrangements, giving someone a ride, or simply sitting with them so they do not feel alone.
The older I get, the more I believe that the world does not need more people pretending to be important.
It needs more people willing to be useful.
More people willing to be present.
More people willing to help without turning everything into a performance.
We cannot take anything with us when our time comes. Not the money, not the pride, not the excuses, not the grudges. What stays behind is how we treated people when they needed us.
So today, I am reminding myself too:
Stay human.
Stay humble.
Stay helpful.
And when someone you love is carrying something heavy, do not wait for someone else to step in.
Be there.
